JUNE - BOWEL CANCER AWARENESS

JUNE IS BOWEL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH.

OUR GOAL, THIS MONTH, IS TO CREATE MORE AWARENESS FOR OUR PATIENTS, WHĀNAU AND WIDER COMMUNITY SURROUNDING BOWEL CANCER SYMPTOMS, GETTING CHECKED AND TREATED EARLY.

Bowel cancer is currently New Zealand’s second biggest cancer killer: every year, over 3,300 Kiwis are diagnosed, and 1,200 of us will die from it. It’s time to change this! The more we can raise awareness of bowel cancer symptoms and prevention, the more we reduce the stigma around talking about it with doctors – and with each other.

Kia ora,

We've created this team because we want to raise money during Bowel Cancer Awareness Month to help more people learn the symptoms and get checked and treated early.

Our team is taking part in a Step Challenge, promoting Bowel Cancer Awareness and getting fit. (See details further below)

Please help us by donating through our page. It only takes a minute, and any money you can give (no matter how big or small) will go a long way to helping us reach our goal.

100 people die of bowel cancer, and 250 are diagnosed every month in Aotearoa. Bowel Cancer NZ will use the money we raise to run awareness and education programmes, fund free patient support services, and research & advocacy to influence the long-term survival of bowel cancer patients.

Please consider donating, as together, we can make a difference for bowel cancer patients and their whānau.

Thank you so much. We really appreciate your support!

Ngā mihi,

TIME TO SCREEN

New Zealand’s National Bowel Screening Programme

Time to Screen is a free government-run programme to help detect bowel cancer.

It is offered every two years to people aged 60 to 74 years who are eligible for publicly funded health care.

Māori and Pasifika will be invited to participate in bowel screening from 50 years old, which is rolling out nationally and is now underway at Te Whatu Ora Waikato. The starting age is lower because a higher proportion of bowel cancer occurs in Māori and Pacific people before reaching 60, compared with others. More information can be found here.

When it is your turn to be screened, you will receive an invitation letter, a consent form, and a free bowel screening kit.

Screening is one of the most effective ways to find bowel cancer early before it spreads. Call Time to Screen on 0800 924 432 or visit their website timetoscreen.nz to learn more.

However, bowel screening is not right for everyone. You should not take part if you:

  • have symptoms of bowel cancer

  • have had a colonoscopy within the last five years

  • are on a bowel polyp or bowel cancer surveillance programme

  • have had, or are currently being treated for, bowel cancer

  • have had your large bowel removed

  • have ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease that is currently active

  • are seeing your doctor about bowel problems.

If you are not eligible for the National Bowel Screening Programme and have any concerns regarding your bowel health, please see your GP for further advice and testing without delay.
